ING New York City Marathon 2008

ING New York City Marathon 2008

Run the most glamorous marathon in the world - in New York City. See the sights, soak up the atmosphere and sweat out the small pre-race martini you treated yourself to the night before.

New York, New York

Surely this has to be one of the greatest challenges you can set yourself: a weekend in Manhattan with no shopping, no bar-hopping and a mere 26-mile marathon to run.

Probably the most famous road race in the world, the New York Marathon has turned the art of long-distance running into a huge, buzzing media event. Taking in all five boroughs of NYC, it now attracts more than 90,000 runners from all over the globe - so you could pick-up a handy new business contact before you cross the finish line in Central Park.

Sadly, a run-on part in the next Woody Allen movie isn't guaranteed, but you can clock up some pretty iconic sightseeing as you jog around the blocks.

Quick fact: The first NYC Marathon in 1970 only had 127 participants. It cost just $1 to enter and a mere 55 runners crossed the finish line. Isn't it amazing really when you look at the numbers today - that's what a bit of TV publicity can do!

Useful local phrase: Stay motivated by finding a 'work buddy' with similar goals. Training goals that is - not the number of Cosmopolitans consumed après sprint.
